I forgot to mention this while migrating old videos off of YouTube, but it turns out the file transfer issue was a Thunar bug, and updating to the latest Thunar (via git) literally just solved the problem for my partner. Well, I say "just", but any time you're having to build half of XFCE from scratch on a laptop that isn't even set up with GCC installed yet, it does take, like, a whole day to slowly trial and error your way through all the dependencies and false starts.
